Where your Whanganui River Canoe adventure begins

I had the most amazing time on the River with Owhango Adventures! Grant was super helpful and supportive and offered fabulous gear and insight! My guide Willy was nothing short of amazing. He was kind and deeply knowledgable and it was so fabulous being the only two on the river. I ate delicious food and saw the most incredible scenery of my life. I would recommend Owhango adventures to literally anyone. These people will take amazing care of you and offer a true once-in-a-lifetime experience. If you’re hesitant, I recommend going for it! Everyone can learn from the river!

We recently took on the 4 day Whanganui river journey and man what an experience! Thank you so much to the Owhango team, Grant and Jacob! You provided a great service, great gear, and good inside knowledge about the river and what to expect. We struggled on our first day due to low river levels but a quick confidence boost and some good kiwi attitude from the team convinced us to keep on going- and boy am I glad we did. We made new friends, had lots of fun, got a little bit wet, and feel in love with the Whanganui River. We recommend Owhango Adventures to anyone looking for a true kiwi experience, family vibes, and great chats. Once again thank you guys, we will most definitely be back 🛶🌿🌊

Highly recommended these guys. We just completed the three day canoeing trip on the Whanganui River and had an excellent time. We did not book a guided tour, but kind of ended up alongside one, and if you are on the fence, go for the guided tour. Shout out to Willie who is an excellent river guide, full of local knowledge, and ever so kind and helpful. Our canoes were fine, the barrels worked well and Willies great knowledge of the river meant we stayed in our canoe watching several others go for a swim at the 50/50. I also liked how Willid set out the mini powhiri and got to attend it twice – first as a visitor then as an adopted member (and he let me murder Te Aroha twice, too). We had a fun and safe time!

We wanted to do a 3-day self-guided canoe trip in late autumn (end of May, off-season) and Grant was the only tour provider we could find who still rented out canoes. The whole endeavor was very spontaneous but Grant supported us with everything we needed. He let us sleep in his (very basic) guest house for free the night before and gave us a thorough instruction for the canoeing in the morning before we started the trip. He checked back on us daily using the satellite-run emergency device. His staff was nice too, both shuttles were convenient and very reliable.
It was an unforgettable trip and we had the entire river and the huts for ourselves, just as Grant had predicted as other operators had already closed down for winter season. What an experience for a really fair price!

We had a spectacular time on the river. Communication from day one was great and helpful when I was trying to organise the logistics of our trip. Very handy that they do drop off and pick up for the trip and tue free accommodation on the day before. It is a pretty old establishment, but everything works. Canoes were great and the barrels worked well for us, though we didn’t end up in the river, but the other pair did twice and they said everything was still well attached and didn’t get wet. Everyone we met from the business was friendly and just good fellas. :) thanks guys!

Best priced canoes for the great walk, cool it came with shuttle to/from the river and accommodation.

1 of 3 barrels we had leaked water inside, they were smaller than my rucksack so we had to only put the contents inside. Make sure to bring a dry bag!

Safety briefing was cool but putting the canoes back they werent messing around.

Awesome 3 day guided canoeing trip with Stacy on the Whanganui River! Stacy was a great guide as we canoed down and stayed at campsites every night. Stayed at the Owhango Adventures lodge for the night before starting the tour. Got a lot of sun and some rainy days in the Spring, but really fun overall!!
